A Wearable Camera That Turns Into a Drone and Flies Off Your Wrist

Remember the flux capacitor USB car charger that started off as an April Fool's joke and turned out to be a really fun device? Well, Razer's April Fools device from six months back, Eidolon, is partially becoming a thing now - and it looks great.

Meet Nixie, a wearable camera that flies off your wrist and turns into a remote-controlled quadcopter. It's the bizarre-yet-appealing wearable camera drone nobody asked for... and now we kind of want it.

Intel is holding a competition to encourage new wearable technology ideas, and the Nixie is one of the finalists. So far, it's still in development, so the flying wristlet camera is rough around the edges. Team captain Christoph Kohstall eventually wants you to be able to send the the Nixie flying with a gesture. It would recognize where you're standing, snap a picture, then return to the wrist, like a futuristic paparazzi boomerang.

If sticking your arm out to capture photos makes you feel like a lo-tech peasant, you're probably Nixie's target demographic.

All of that seems to be a long way off still; they're going to have to make the Nixie extremely consistent to make it worthwhile. After all, getting one of those GoPro stick mounts to take a farther-away shot might not be as convenient of simply flinging a camera off your wrist, but it's also a lot less complicated. In a crowded area, I'd guess it'd be hard for the Nixie to tell which person it was meant to fly back towards.

The Nixie team has a lot of work to do, but if they can polish their prototype, this is a weird wearable worth watching. Check them out at their fresh website or facebook page.

  1. If they had a base that is actually the wearable part of the device, and just have the nixie wrap around the band when it's attached. The base could hold the memory device, as well as the beacon it needs to fly back to, and possibly battery.
This would require nano tech, to make the device small enough to wear, which we're incapable of thus far (to my knowledge).

    1. Oh you're so full of knowledge! Please tell us of other "nano tech" that we can't use now...
      I've got an idea!
How about plasma powered cyber brains that could produce a cyborg retina from your left nipple!? It could track the distance your head has traveled up your own ass!!

  2. Good idea... but its bound to hit someone in the face at some point, how does it recognize the user from a group of people, how good is it navigating from/back to the user in a confined/obstructed environment.

    1. That's cute, someone thinks we're going to have privacy in the future.

    2. So does your cell phone camera.

    5. Oh no someone took away that thing I didn't have.

  4. just have a wristband with a UV luminescent signature that the drone can recognize and home in on, like a guided missile tracking a laser highlight.

  5. Anonymous and Anonymous are both idiots and should refrain from sharing their opinions in public.

    Anonymous is totally right though.

  6. Anonymous you are really dumb but I think Anonymous here gets what I'm talking about. But Anonymous and Anonymous you really grind my gears and Anonymous you should get a lesson in physics. Whatever, Anonymous, I get it too. Oh and btw, I'm anonymous. Nice to meet you.

  14. To solve all issues, simply introduce a "landing pad", in this case an arm band.

Have a medium arm band hosting a battery pack to recharge the device as well as store the video/pics captured so the actual copter can remain small with low memory/battery life. Having this band also allows the copter to register a beacon to follow or vice versa (the band could detect the location of the copter or the other way around), and it could be as simple as touching the band or speaking into an ear piece Bluetooth linked to it. All the logic can remain within the band/your phone so all the copter has to do is follow input commands telling it where to go. As for navigation, an accelerometer/ local gps function could map out the terrain you're traveling through, or you could simply input a command such as "Locate Beacon, reverse 10 feet, up 15 feet, Record Video on Beacon, Return (reverse of takeoff function, accounting for drift by Beacon location)". If these guys had a decent programmer working with them they could probably link all of this to an app so your phone could be used as the controller/brains. The drone could remain a completely unintelligent RC Copter rather than bulking it up with additional hardware.
