Never miss the right side up with SanDisk's new reversible USB Type-C connector

Remember those rumors about a 12-inch MacBook that ditched a MagSafe connector and traditional USB ports for a single USB Type-C port? If true, SanDisk's new Dual USB Drive will be the first flash drive that's able to connect to the redesigned hardware without an ugly adapter.

But given it will be a few years before USB Type-C is common on all computers and mobile devices, SanDisk's new 32GB Dual USB Drive still comes with a standard-sized USB port on one end. When using the other, though, you'll never again have to make a 50/50 guess as to which is the right side up because it's reversible. USB Type C will replace the standard micro USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port on smartphones used today, providing for faster transfer speeds.

SanDisk is also targeting smartphone owners with a new higher capacity microSD card. Up from the 128GB maximum today, SanDisk's new 200GB Ultra microSDXC card brings more storage space to smartphones and tablets.

  1. Pretty cool feature, but it doesn't seem like it will be useful for a few years, as machines catch up.

  2. @Dave - It will be useful for anyone who purchases the new Apple MacBook...which is half the point of this article...the USB drive has both capabilities and will be useful for everyone.

    1. Will it really be useful though? USB-C is nice, but it doesn't really add much of value. Yes it doubles the speed, and the connector is reversible, but it doesn't really transform the market. It just replaces the current connector. There is no REAL reason to buy this unless it is cheap, or they bump the speed higher.

I'm looking forward more to the 100W USB standard which will allow us to charge laptops from USB, power the monitor simultaneously (possibly), and maybe eventually lead to some interesting new devices, such as projectors powered through the computer
